Animations in maps can be useful to visualise either dynamic attributes or
highlighting for example locations.
The concept of animated
maps began already in the 1930s. The first animated map was produced in 1959.
A
series of maps were put together to form a scene and creating animation through
photography tricks.
With the development of computers, animated maps
became more popular. But only a few years ago, in the 1990s with the invention
of
faster, more efficient computers, animated maps became really popular and
common.
Today, there are a lot of animated maps, either on the Internet or
on commercial applications.
Animations that are implemented in animated maps can be categorised in the following classes:
- Emphasising locations
- Emphasising attributes
- Visualising change
- Temporal change
- Attribute change
- Spatial change
