1.4. Interactivity and Cartography

Learning Objectives

You will be able...

  • ...to list two examples of click-action implementations in a multimedia map.
  • ...to list two examples of click-and-drag-action implementations in a multimedia map.

Introduction

Which one of the following maps provides more information? (Answer the question to yourself)

Example 1 Example 2

Interactivity within multimedia maps can be very useful. Multimedia maps without interactivity are quite boring. Either they are static and provide only a minimum of information or they are animated without having the possibility to (e.g.) control the animation. With interactivity, the user can adapt the map to his needs (e.g. through zooming and panning). Additionally, he can get the information he needs on-demand (e.g. through moving the mouse over a state to get the state name). All the input and output actions that we presented in the last chapter can be implemented into an interactive map.

This chapter will give you a few examples how to implement the mentioned input and output actions into a multimedia map.

remark

If you want to discuss the two examples above, do so on the discussion board "Interactivity and Cartography".
